Brighton History

Since George IV, a royal party animal, fell in love in 18th century Brighton, it has attracted many tourists looking for fun, frolics, and sea air. Brighton's iconic Regency Squares and Crescents, the Royal Pavilion, and other famous landmarks make it a vibrant and welcoming city.

What more can a city offer than art, live music, and entertainment? Plus, there are always increasing numbers of boutique hotels, independent shops and award-winning restaurants. It turns out, quite a bit! It borders the stunning South Downs National Park which itself is an International Dark Sky Reserve, and has eight miles of sandy beach right at its doorstep. It's only a 1-hour train ride from London, and half an hour from London Gatwick Airport. This makes it easy to reach.

Brighton ranks among the 50 best universities in Britain, due to the high number of graduates from our university who have gone on to further education or are employed in highly skilled jobs (2022 Complete University Guide).

Moulsecoomb's campus will be transformed by The Big Build. It includes new student rooms, an academic building and home to the School of Business and Law. There are also new Student Union and exercise facilities.

In the 2022 Complete University Guide, the University of Brighton had the greatest improvement of any UK institution.

The Bronze Age, Roman, and Anglo-Saxon period are the most recent periods that archaeologists have found evidence of settlement. In the Domesday Book (1086), it was noted that "Brighthelmstone", an ancient settlement, existed. It was a popular health destination from 1730.

King George IV spent a lot of time in the city and built the Royal Pavilion. It became a favorite destination for London day-trippers after the arrival of railways in 1841. Brighton was joined by Hove to create the unifying authority of Brighton and Hove, which received city status in 2000. The combined population of Brighton and Hove was approximately 290,885 as of 2017. Brighton is regarded as "the UK's hippest city", "the most happiest area to live in the UK" and "unofficial homosexual capital of the UK".

Bristelmestune is the earliest recorded attestation that Brighton has been given its name. It was found in The Domesday Book. There have been more than 40 variants of the name, but Brighthelmstone or Brighthelmston was the most common between 14th century and 18th century.

The name "Brighton", originally an informal abbreviation, was first used in 1660. It gradually replaced the more formal name in the 18th century. Brighthelmstone, however, remained the official name of the town until 1810. Name is Anglo-Saxon. It is believed that the name derives its origin from Beorthelm+ tun--the Homestead of Beorthelm. This Old English name was often associated with other villages in England.

Although the tun element is very common on Sussex's coast, it rarely occurs when combined with a person's name. A second etymology, which is derived from Old English words meaning "stony valley", can be used but it has less acceptance. Brighthelm is the name of a number of places, including a Brighton pub, University of Sussex residence halls, and a church. Antony Dale, a historian in 1950 noted that some unnamed antiquaries suggested the Old English term "brist" (or "briz") as the source of Brighthelmstone's first name. The Wellesbourne split the town in half, but a winterbourne was later culverted and buried during the 18th century.
